Mod Podge Napkin Decoupaged Nightstand – “Garden Treasures”

When I found out that Plaid Enterprises was the sponsor for this month’s Fab Furniture Flipping Contest™ and that we would be using Mod Podge for a decoupaged project I jumped right on board, I already had a project lined up for this technique and what perfect timing, for Mod Podge’s 50th anniversary!

*This is a sponsored post,  I have received at least one of the products used to complete this project.  All product opinions are entirely my own, regardless of sponsorship. This post also may contain affiliate links of which I earn a small commision upon product purchase, to help fund this site.

The Before

If Ya’ll follow me on Instagram, and you should. It’s where I share all the behind the scenes shenanigans! You may remember this shot I posted a few months back of a couple of vintage pieces one of my friends picked up roadside for me.

The Color

No custom mixes for this project, for the body I used straight Pitch Black Milk Paint mixed with some Extra Bond to prevent this piece from chipping.

The Finish

For the body, I wanted a deep black, and chose to use some black wax for the finish.

The Top Finish

For the top I wanted a really durable protective finish, so I used a few coats of Pure Tung Oil, followed by black wax just because I love the smooth feel a waxed finish leaves.

Drawers Under Coat

For the drawers I used a lighter color, because the paper was so sheer and  I wanted a hint of grey to pop through. Here I used a weathered grey water based stain on the face and pitch black paint on the edges.

The Decoupage

Now on to the focal point of this piece…. I found these great napkins in a garden motif, I split the three layers and only used the top layer with the design. Then I coated the drawers with Mod Podge Furniture Formula in Matte, and carefully placed the delicate sheer napkin over the top, not perfect because I wanted an aged distressed look

The napkins ran small so there was some cutting and piecing together. Topped it off with a final coat of Mod Podge.

Finishing The Drawers

After the napkins were thoroughly dry, I lightly sanded the tops to smooth down the wrinkles and distress them up a bit, I prefer a smooth to the touch finish, so I finished them off with some clear wax over the paper and black wax on the painted drawer edges.
