Key Largo Shell World Sign using #Overlays by Unique Junktique

April Fab Furniture Flipping Contest – “Cut N Paste With Overlays”

So excited to be part of April’s Fab Furniture Flipping Contest, and when I saw that O’verlays was this month’s sponsor I was sure to sign up right away! Then I checked my furniture shed for the perfect partner, and don’t you know I did not have one piece in my stash that was suitable for an Overlay? Not a single one… nothing was crying out… choose Me!  Well I wasn’t going to let those serpentine drawers and fretwork doors mock me, time for a plan B!

*This is a sponsored post,  I have received at least one of the products used to complete this project.  All product opinions are entirely my own, regardless of sponsorship. This post also may contain affiliate links of which I earn a small commision upon product purchase, to help fund this site.

The Inspiration

I love the Florida Keys and try to get down there every chance I can, this sign on Key Largo from a local tourist trap was my inspiration for this month’s project. Every trip since I was a little kid, we’ve visited Shell World and purchased little gifts from the sea. I wanted to bring that memory into my home, and without a suitable piece of furniture to work with I had to improvise a teeny wee bit!

The Perfect Overlay

When I saw this Overlay, I just had to incorporate it in a design. Without even considering what pieces I had on hand, I just couldn’t get my order in any quicker! If you follow me on Instagram behind the scenes, you saw this shot when it came in, look how wonderfully large it is!

shell sign prep

 Prep Work

I proceeded to cut some boards, screw them together to make the sign, add a bit of wood putty, and primed the whole thing to prevent bleedthrough from the knots in the pine.

Adding Texture

I wanted to add some texture to this piece, so I used Saltwash for a beachy weathered finish, here is the basecoat.

Adding Text

Planning out the text to match the inspiration sign, I used Word to print out the letters. Then figured out the placement and did a chalk rub transfer for each one.

Painting Details

Painted the second layer of the Saltwash finish with some leftover teal chalk paint, sealed with polyacrylic,  then hand painted the letters with a white acrylic.

The Overlay

The overlay piece was super easy to work with, no prep was required for the chalk paint I used, and I used liquid nails as recommended to adhere it to the sign. It couldn’t have been any easier!

shell sign hanger

I added heavy duty wire hanger hardware as this thing is pretty heavy! Finally finished the sign with a final coat of Polycrylic spray, not sure if this piece will end up as indoor or outdoor use, so I wanted added protection.
